The term "Emergency Department," also known as Emergency Room (ER), refers to a specialized area within a hospital or medical facility where patients with acute illnesses, injuries or conditions that require immediate medical attention are treated. These departments are staffed by physicians and other healthcare professionals who are trained in emergency medicine and equipped to handle a wide range of medical situations. The goal is to provide rapid assessment, diagnosis, treatment and stabilization for patients with urgent needs, such as chest pain, severe trauma or injury, loss of consciousness, difficulty breathing, or other serious symptoms that require immediate attention. Emergency departments are typically open 24/7 and see a high volume of patients, both walk-ins and those brought in by ambulance.
